So what is Family Studies all about? Gone are the days of home economics where the course focused solely on sewing, cooking and keeping house !

Today’s Family Studies mission “is to enable individuals and families to build and maintain systems of action leading to individual self –formation and to enlighten co-operative participation in the critique and formulation of social goals and means for accomplishing them” (Brown, 1979 ).

In order to accomplish these goals, Grimsby Secondary School offers Family Studies courses in Food and Nutrition, Food and Nutrition Sciences, Individual and Family Living, Parenting, Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology and Individuals and Families in a Diverse Society.

These courses provide a blend of “hands on” practicums and labs as well as theories which provide the solid basis and understanding of the practicums.

A major goal of Family Studies is to integrate the aspect of diversity and multiculturalism into all our Family Studies courses. This provides an excellent background for students who may be interested in working in health care, in public relations, in international and developing countries as educators, in home care facilities for low income or elderly individuals, in politics, in marketing and in schools as teachers.
