Music: Course, Club and Ensemble Information

Grade Nine Music-AMI 1O

This course is designed to introduce students to traditional concert band instruments. This course emphasizes the performance of music at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity and imagination. Students will participate in creative activities teach them to listen with understanding. They will also learn correct musical terminology and its appropriate use.

Grade Ten Music-AMI 2O

This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology, and history. This course has an increased focus on the use of technology with music.


Ms. Henderson

Grade Eleven Music-AMA 3M

The Grade 11-university/college music curriculum is designed to broaden the students’ knowledge and skills in performance, composing, arranging, listening and analysis, music in society, and music and technology. It emphasizes the appreciation, analysis and performance of various kinds of music. Students perform technical exercises and appropriate repertoire, compose and arrange their own music, and analyse live and recorded performances. This course is performance-based, and although performance is a unit unto its own, it is expected that performance be infused in all units of study at this grade level. Students also continue to explore possible careers in or related to music.

Grade Twelve Music-AMA 4M

This course emphasizes the appreciation, analysis, and performance of music from the Twentieth Century, including art music, jazz, popular music, and Canadian and non-Western music. Students will concentrate on developing interpretive skills and the ability to work independently. They will also complete complex creative projects.


Grimsby Bands and Practice Schedules

Junior Band

This group is geared to experienced instrumentalists who are currently in grades 9 or 10. It provides an opportunity to work on band repertoire in a large group setting. Gr 9 students with prior experience are encouraged to participate in this ensemble. This group rehearses once a week.

Jazz Band
Selected from the concert band, this small group of saxes, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section plays a wide range of jazz material. Concerts include school performances, community events, and various festivals. .

Percussion Ensemble
This group is made up of 8-10 auditioned students who have extensive experience in instrumental music.

String Ensemble
The GSS string ensemble is geared to the experienced string player. This student-directed group performs within the community each year and is involved in festivals and annual school concerts. Students are required to supply their own instruments.

 


Vocal Music Classes and Choir

Grade Nine Vocal -AMV 1O
This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology, and history.

Grade Eleven Vocal -AMV 3M
This focus course in vocal music will provide students in the college/ university course with the opportunity to learn to further refine their vocal music skills. Students will also have the opportunity to learn challenging repertoire as they continue their study of music theory, history and analysis.

Grade Twelve Vocal -AMV 4M
This focus course in vocal music will provide students with the opportunity to learn to further refine their vocal music skills. Students will also have the opportunity to learn challenging repertoire as they continue their study of music theory, history and analysis.

Grimsby Choir
This ensemble is open to all students who enjoy singing at any level. The group explores a wide variety of music and performs at the school and at various festivals. No experience is required other than the keen desire to sing! The music department offers a wide variety of ensembles for all levels of ability. Whether you are an instrumentalist or a vocalist, we hope you will be involved in one or more of our extra-curricular groups. Students from the entire student body are welcome to participate. Annual events include Christmas and Spring concerts, as well as participation in provincial music festivals.
